We Are Undeterred
The U.S. Supreme Court announced its decision today to side with millionaires and corporate special interests in Janus v. AFSCME. The 5–4 ruling means that this year’s elections are more important than ever.
Here is our response from Chairman David Pepper:
For years right-wing extremists and deep-pocketed donors have been systematically attacking workers’ rights through the courts and in state legislatures across the country — and today’s 5–4 decision in the Janus case is just the latest example of how millionaires and corporate special interests have tried to rig the economy and pit workers against one another.
While Ohio Democrats are disappointed in today’s decision, we are undeterred. Every election matters, and in the 2018 election, workers’ rights are on the ballot here in Ohio. Republicans in the Statehouse are already pushing an anti-worker agenda backed by out-of-state billionaires, and Mike DeWine made clear in January that he would drag the state back into a divisive fight over so-called right-to-work legislation, when he told the Columbus Dispatch he supports putting it on the ballot, despite the fact that voters overwhelmingly rejected a similar anti-worker law with the defeat of Senate Bill 5.
Unions are essential to building a strong middle class and a thriving economy. Today Ohio Democrats are more determined than ever to stand with our brothers and sisters in labor and fight to ensure working men and women can join together in unions.
Democrats believe that when unions succeed, America succeeds. We know that the right to organize and bargain collectively has helped build the middle class and create shared prosperity for millions of American families.
