ODP Weekly Update: Early Voting Opens as the #PeopleFirst Bus Keeps Chugging Along
OHIO VOTES EARLY
Early voting is now open, and the Ohio Democratic Party’s #PeopleFirst bus tour promoted the first day of early voting with events in Bowling Green, Toledo and Cleveland on Wednesday:
Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur joined the bus tour this week, and as the bus made its way from Toledo to Cleveland, she talked with Chairman David Pepper about Lake Erie, gerrymandering and the importance of electing Democrats in 2018:
Ohio Democrats also held rallies in Cincinnati and Columbus for the first day of early voting:

RUNNING TO BE YOUR GOVERNOR
Mike DeWine took more than $2 million in contributions from the pharmaceutical industry and insurance companies. On his first day as Attorney General, he filed suit to undermine the Affordable Care Act and its protections for people with pre-existing conditions — allowing the insurance companies to turn away Ohioans with such illnesses as asthma, diabetes or cancer.
As Rich Cordray explains in his new ad, “That’s a plan only an insurance company could love.” Rich is “running to be your governor — not theirs.”
ROB ON MSNBC
Rob Richardson spoke with MSNBC’s Joy Reid this weekend about his plan to encourage divestment from private prisons:
“When I look at a budget, it’s more than a set or collection of numbers; it’s really a moral document for what you stand for…. When you have the power to influence investment, you have the power to influence policy in a much larger manner.”
ENDORSED!
The Akron Beacon Journal has endorsed the two Democratic candidates for Ohio Supreme Court — Judge Melody J. Stewart and Judge Michael P. Donnelly — as Cleveland Plain Dealer/Cleveland.com columnist Brent Larkin is emphasizing that the court, which is composed entirely of Republican justices, is in “desperate need of some philosophical and political balance.”
The ABJ endorsement editorial says of Stewart, “She has won respect for the high quality of her work, especially for showing a timely and constructive brand of independence.”
The endorsement of Donnelly notes “his emphasis on the high court’s role as overseer of the courts as a whole” and the work he has done and would continue in “establishing uniform case management orders to address slow civil dockets and achieving greater transparency in plea bargains.”
Larkin’s column explains how we arrived at today’s “Republican stranglehold on the court” — over the past two decades GOP candidates have benefited from “large expenditures on their behalf made by business interests — notably insurance and energy companies.”
Larkin offers praise for Stewart and Donnelly, noting that they have earned higher ratings than their GOP opponents from the Ohio State Bar Association and Judge4Yourself, a nonpartisan rating group.
OUR KIDS DESERVE BETTER
“Our kids deserve better.” That’s the message of a new website — KidsNotCorruption.com — that highlights the disastrous impact of the Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow (ECOT) scam on our kids’ schools.
