Columbus Dispatch Endorses Danny O’Connor

The Columbus Dispatch today endorsed Danny O’Connor in the special election for Ohio’s 12th Congressional District.

From the Dispatch editorial:

In the recorder’s office he reduced the time to file documents from weeks to days and enhanced free filing of military veterans’ discharge documents by connecting veterans with civilian job opportunities. He has proposed recording vital documents for the homeless and domestic violence victims to preserve access to important information for transient populations….

O’Connor calls for new leadership in Congress. “We need change on both sides of the aisle,” he says, and sees his youth and “fresher perspective” as a way to break the influence of special interests that are “dictating the conversation.” It’s why his campaign is not taking contributions from corporate PACs.

He favors rebuilding roads and bridges instead of a border wall (although he favors strong border security through enforcement), would raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour and work to assure access to health care. “If you’re willing to work 40 hours a week, you shouldn’t live in poverty.” He views Medicare and Social Security as earned social contracts and would not raise eligibility ages.

A CNN profile on the race noted the similarities between this special election contest and the one in Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District, where a young, fresh candidate named Conor Lamb prevailed over a GOP state legislator.

The Ohio district, one that Ohio Gov. John Kasich represented for the better part of two decades, is one Republicans should carry. But the shifting dynamics of the Republican Party and suburban voters distaste for Trump — all exemplified in the Lamb victory — have Democrats upbeat that they could send the President another special election signal in August.

“We are absolutely hoping for a Lamb-like win,” Greg Clark, a 68-year old Democratic voter and activist, said at a O’Connor event. “That is what we are looking for. He is the model.”

The last day to register to vote in the OH-12 special election is Monday, July 9. Early voting opens on Tuesday, July 10.

Dettelbach Plan Earns Praise

Steve Dettelbach this week released his plan to combat human trafficking, to provide needed tools to help hold traffickers accountable for this unfathomable crime, while expanding support for survivors so they can rebuild their lives.

Dettelbach said, “As a career prosecutor — and as a father — I want to make sure that every mother, every father, every family with someone who’s in trouble has somebody who’s trying to help them.”

“As an elected official who has worked tirelessly to move the needle on human trafficking law for a decade, I understand the importance of electing an attorney general who shares similar views and passions on making human trafficking a thing of the past,” said state Rep. Teresa Fedor. “By aggressively prosecuting traffickers, prioritizing recovery services for survivors and victims and protecting Ohio communities far and wide, Steve Dettelbach is the candidate in this race with the means and drive to help put an end to this heinous crime so we can protect our children.”

The Toledo Blade editorial board praised Dettelbach’s proposal:

Mr. Dettelbach has demonstrated genuine seriousness about an issue critical to Ohio. His stance is an invitation, not only to his opponent in the AG’s race, but to all Ohio politicians to raise their game — both in terms of understanding and in terms of legislation — on one of the great moral challenges of our time.

DNC Investment in Ohio Organizing

This week the Democratic National Committee announced a nearly $88,000 grant to the Ohio Democratic Party to increase organizing and outreach in African-American communities in northeast Ohio. This new investment is in addition to the $100,000 already awarded to the Ohio Democratic Party through the State Party Innovation Fund.

“The new DNC has been working tirelessly to support our state parties, motivate voters to get to the polls and organize around issues that matter for country’s future,” said DNC Chair Tom Perez. “We are investing in our base communities and putting organizers on the ground across the country because we know that’s the only way we’ll win. This investment will help ensure that Democrats are talking to voters in every community and make sure that activists and candidates have the new tools and resources they need to succeed. The DNC is proud to partner with our state parties to expand our engagement in all communities and support Democratic candidates running up and down the ticket.”

In addition, the DNC — in partnership with the Congressional Black Caucus and African-American women mayors — is launching their “Seat at the Table” tour. Through the tour, the DNC is seeking to rebuild relationships, restore trust and strengthen infrastructure within communities to champion Democratic values and build towards electoral victories. Ohio Legislative Black Caucus President Stephanie Howse joined the tour for a panel discussion at the annual Essence Fest in New Orleans this week.

Ohio GOP Already Pushing RTW

State Rep. Kristina Roegner — who is running for a promotion to the Ohio Senate — and a number of her Republican colleagues in the Ohio Statehouse are hoping the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Janus v. AFSCME will “embolden” lawmakers to make Ohio a so-called “right-to-work” state.

If the proposal doesn’t move in Ohio’s 2018 lame-duck session, it could be “on the agenda” in the near future. Just a few weeks ago, the Ohio Republican candidate for governor, Mike DeWine, “left the door open to passing right-to-work in the future if he were elected,” and in January, DeWine told the Columbus Dispatch he supports putting the issue on the ballot.
