Trump’s broken promises on student debt and education

Here’s what his campaign won’t tell you — Trump is making college less affordable and campuses less safe.

This week the Trump campaign is going to college campuses across Ohio — but they aren’t mentioning all of the promises Donald Trump has broken when it comes to college affordability and student debt.

As a candidate, Trump made a lot of promises to college students and borrowers. Just as he has done to manufacturing workers, farmers and people with pre-existing conditions, Trump has broken his promises.

On a press call yesterday, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, state Rep. Catherine Ingram and College Democrats of Ohio President Eva Holtkamp talked about the president’s disastrous record on higher education.

Congresswoman Joyce Beatty:

“Something that really concerns me is that Trump has made a point of going after programs that help low-income students — low-income students, many of them are African-American, black and brown students.

Fifty thousand students in Ohio across 129 schools will be impacted by Trump’s proposal to eliminate the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant Program. And if I’m looking at the math right, that would be a cut of more than $27 million for our Ohio students. And you know when we talk about programs like this, we should not be talking about taking away dollars, we should be talking about maintaining or increasing dollars because education is our future.”

State Rep. Catherine Ingram:

“Donald Trump’s attacks on higher education don’t just hurt our universities and their students, they hurt our economy as well.

Ohio’s public universities are key to our state economy not just because of their role in educating and training the next generation of workers, the Buckeye State’s public institutions add more than $40 billion in economic impact every year.”

College Democrats of Ohio President Eva Holtkamp:

“For many college students, it is impossible to truly explain how much the administration has hurt them. Now under Secretary [Betsy] DeVos’ new guidelines, the focus is on protecting the perpetrators. As someone who is a survivor of campus sexual assault, this is a slap in the face.”

Trump Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is also in the Buckeye State this week. Billionaire Betsy has been attacking public education for years, and back in 2008 her political action committee was fined $5 million by the Ohio Elections Commission for illegally laundering campaign contributions from a charter school magnate.

On the press call, Ohio Democratic Party Chairman David Pepper highlighted Billionaire Betsy’s history of pushing charters and voucher programs — to the detriment of our public schools.

Ohio Democratic Party Chairman David Pepper:

“Going back more than a decade, Betsy has been a disaster for public education. She has pushed for vouchers and more charter schools, and here in Ohio we’ve seen firsthand how for-profit charter schools have failed our kids and cheated the taxpayers out of millions.

Now as the secretary of education, Betsy has continued her campaign to take public tax dollars and give them to private schools and charters. And she wants to do it by taking resources away from programs that support educators and help kids from low-income families.”

Not to mention, in a cabinet full of ethically challenged and negligent appointees, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has been one of the worst. And that’s saying something.

So much corruption … so many broken promises.

And Ohio students and families are the ones paying the price.
