COMING TO A TOWN NEAR YOU

“Our candidates are focused on making sure Ohioans have access to affordable health care, good-paying jobs and quality education — issues that directly impact all Ohio families,” said Ohio Democratic Party Chairman David Pepper. “We’re traveling the state to shine light on the GOP culture of corruption in Columbus the past eight years, and to support our diverse team of Democratic leaders we can trust to fix Columbus and make a brighter future for all Ohioans.”

The “People First” bus tour will launch with a rally featuring the Ohio Democratic statewide candidates at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus on Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Click here to RSVP and invite your networks to attend the bus tour kickoff.

Following the launch, the bus tour will travel to Delaware and Mansfield on Tuesday and continue with stops the first week in New Philadelphia, Salem, Wooster, Findlay, Granville, Cincinnati, Bucyrus, Napoleon, Lorain, Elyria and Cleveland.

Text OHIO to 90975 to receive an alert when the bus tour comes to your community.

The first week of the tour will culminate with the annual State Dinner on Sunday, Oct. 7, with keynote speaker U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris.

DISPATCH ENDORSES CORDRAY FOR GOVERNOR

Big news this weekend — for only the second time since 1962, the Columbus Dispatch has endorsed the Democratic candidate for governor.

The Dispatch agrees with Rich Cordray that 2018 is a “change election” and that “change is needed.”

In their endorsement editorial, the Dispatch highlighted Mike DeWine’s disastrous record on health care:

DeWine supports further restrictions on abortion rights and has questioned the sustainability of Medicaid expansion, which secured health care coverage for 700,000 low-income Ohioans. He worked as attorney general to dismantle federal health-care reform in the Affordable Care Act and has declined to join other state attorneys general in protecting insurance coverage for those with pre-existing conditions.

The endorsement also touted Cordray’s “forward-looking vision”:

He argues persuasively that making Ohio more responsive to women’s rights and family-friendly issues, such as reducing costs of higher education, will make the state more attractive for business development and expansion.

Cordray will face off against DeWine at their next debate on Monday at 7 p.m. live from Marietta College. You can submit a question via email to share@nbci.com or elections@wtap.com, or post a video question on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #OHGOV18.

DEMS IN ATHENS COUNTY CALL OUT “DR. DEWINE”

The dangers of Republican attacks on health care and the importance of electing Democrats up and down the ballot were the focus of a news conference this week in Athens with Rick Neal (candidate for Ohio’s 15th Congressional District), Shawna Roberts (candidate for Ohio’s 6th Congressional District), Amber Daniels (candidate for Ohio’s 78th state House District) and Taylor Sappington (candidate for Ohio’s 94th state House District).

DISHEVELED

Friends of Sherrod Brown this week released a new ad, “Disheveled,” that leans into Sherrod’s “distinct” appearance — a look comprised of wrinkled suits and a Cleveland Indians hoodie. In the ad, workers at Clyde’s Whirlpool facility pay no mind to Sherrod’s rumpled look, saying no one has worked harder to protect their jobs.

SOULS ON THE VOTER ROLLS

More than 150 churches participated in Ohio’s inaugural statewide #SoulsOnTheVoterRolls initiative last weekend. This initiative is a critical part of the Ohio Democratic Party’s minority engagement program.

Ohio’s deadline to register to vote in the upcoming election is Tuesday, Oct. 9. Go to IWillVote.com/OH to confirm your registration and get ready to vote!

STATEHOUSE SPOTLIGHT

John Kennedy — Ohio House District 76

John Kennedy ran 142 miles this weekend from his home in Aurora to the Ohio Statehouse — all to raise awareness of the high cost of prescription drugs.

Kennedy, an ultra-marathoner and Type 1 diabetic, told the Associated Press, “For me, this is one of those issues that it doesn’t matter what party you’re affiliated with. Everybody knows somebody who has a pre-existing condition, if they don’t have one themselves. Or they love somebody who does. This cuts across all of that.”

Rachel Crooks — Ohio House District 88

Rachel Crooks is speaking out in support of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, telling the Sandusky Register, “I think you could call her a hero. It’s incredibly brave what she’s doing and it’s tough to relive something like this on a national stage. It took someone having a similar experience [with Donald Trump] and speaking out about it publicly before I did. It’s a domino effect and when someone comes forward it builds courage for the other people involved.”

Casey Weinstein — Ohio House District 37

Hudson Councilman Casey Weinstein is taking on attorney Mike Rasor — who is facing questions about unethical behavior after he was ordered by a federal judge to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines for “fabricating evidence and misleading the courts.”

Weinstein told the Akron Beacon Journal, “I think this behavior is sadly representative of the culture of corruption that Ohioans have had to settle for from politicians in Columbus. The residents of District 37 are ready for new leadership, and they deserve to have a representative they can trust.”

LIVING OUR DEMOCRATIC VALUES

The Ohio Democratic Party reached a tentative agreement this week with organizers on the Campaign for Ohio. If the agreement is ratified, the Ohio Democratic Party will proudly become the first state party in the nation to finalize an organizers contract with the Campaign Workers Guild.

Ohio Democratic Party Chairman David Pepper released the following statement:

“When we voluntarily recognized the union a little more than two months ago, we stated that we believe in living our Democratic values not just in whom we elect, but in how we operate, and this tentative agreement on a contract — reached in just a little over two months of negotiations — demonstrates that commitment.

“We are firmly committed to building a more sustainable progressive movement that invests in its workers as one of our most important resources. We will also continue to encourage Ohio candidates and campaigns to treat their workers with the dignity that all working men and women deserve.

“With the positive and rapid resolution of this important process, Ohio Democrats are now focusing our complete attention on stopping Mike DeWine, Jim Renacci and the harmful and dangerous policies being introduced by the entire Republican ticket.

“We thank our workers for all that they have done and all they will do from now through Election Day to elect Democrats up and down the ticket in 2018.”
