16 days out — here’s the latest
Learn more about our AMAZING trip to three churches all before a pig roast and a barn storm.
Hey y’all, it’s Jewell again! I’m tagging back in for Claire today to tell you all about the amazing day I had on the #PeopleFirst bus tour in Columbus, Dover and Delaware with a ton of Ohio Democrats of every demographic.
We had a lot of ground to cover today, so we got started at 7:30 a.m. We met up with Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, Judge Michael Donnelly and Councilman Michael Stinziano and headed over to First Church of God where we met up with Rich Cordray, Steve Dettelbach, Zack Space, Rob Richardson, Judge Terri Jamison, Karen Phipps, state Rep. Hearcel Craig, Erica Crawley and Councilwoman Priscilla Tyson.
Our first church stop was at First Church of God. We got to hear from Congresswoman Joyce Beatty and Rich Cordray as well as enjoy a sermon from none other than Rep. Craig. Listen —if y’all haven’t heard Rep. Craig preach from a pulpit, you’re missing out.
We climbed back on the bus with the first load of candidates, but this time, we were joined by Rich Cordray, Steve Dettelbach and Judge Melody Stewart! It was great to be back at New Birth! I went here when I was an undergrad student, and I was excited to come back out to this church — but this time, I got to come back with some of my fav candidates.
It wouldn’t be a New Birth service without a bomb praise dance and singing combination from the pulpit to kick off the service.
Before getting off the bus, we did a quick Facebook Live with Congresswoman Beatty, Rich Cordray, Steve Dettelbach, Zack Space, Judge Michael Donnelly, Judge Melody Stewart and Councilman Stinziano.

Then, we headed into Family Baptist Church for a final church stop of the day. The ushers and choir were all wearing pink to acknowledge Breast Cancer Awareness Month, AND we got to sing all three verses of “Lift Every Voice” (aka the Black National Anthem). The power of the voices joining in unison to sing that powerful song was definitely something to remember.
After the service, I changed out of my skirt and blazer and into some jeans and a quarter-zip sweater to head on over to Dover with Chairman David Pepper, Rob Richardson and Jason Rae — he’s the secretary of the Democratic National Committee.
We pulled up to a crowd of Dover Dems pumped up and ready to hear from Chairman Pepper and Rob Richardson, plus Ken Harbaugh, Melinda Miller, Dan Milleson and Jeremiah Miller.
I also got the chance to inhale their amazing pulled pork, mac n’cheese and baked beans. Best. Meal. Ever.
On the way over, Chairman Pepper interviewed Rob Richardson and Jason Rae to talk about how important the treasurer’s race is this year and about how things are looking in Wisconsin — that’s where Jason lives when he’s not touring the state with our Democratic slate.
We finished up today’s #PeopleFirst bus tour at the Delaware Democrats’ barbecue in a 188-year-old barn complete with a camp fire AND hay bales. A huge group of Delaware Dems greeted us outside, and we got the chance to catch up with Louise Valentine, Aileen Wagner, Indu Rajan and Kathleen Tate.
As always, her message was on point, and she told us all about how she wants to make health care a priority if elected this November.
Overall, we got the chance to catch up with a lot of our candidates and spread our #PeopleFirst message far and wide.
Catch y’all next time, and remember to follow me on Twitter @jewelldporter to keep up with the work I’m doing with a team of amazing Ohio Democrats to turn the Buckeye State blue this November.
